Rosa Lee Sweet Whim represents years of innovative winemaking in the pursuit of creating the ultimate Napa Valley Port-style wine. My early interest in this style of wine was sparked after completing Cal Poly's first distillation project (producing Brandy) while working toward my winemaking degree. ZD embraced the idea of a complex, multi-vintage blend, focused on diverse and expressive varieties that thrive in Napa: Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
Rosa Lee Sweet Whim was produced from 27 independent and distinct wines from the 2012-2015 vintages. These wines were aged in 70% neutral American Oak and 30% seasoned Brandy barrels (an American twist on Cognac barrels traditionally used in Portugal), adding great complexity and depth of flavor.
Medium purple in color, the wine provides up front aromas of cherry and raspberry, followed by subtle notes of almond, apricot, and spice. Silky texture and refreshing acidity are complemented by a sweetness that is juicy without being overpowering. Bottled in late 2016, this wine is just beginning its journey - enjoy now, or cellar for up to 10, 20 or even 40 years.
